Maybe you're just not very good at your job. You're forgetting that malware is still a huge problem and removal is necessary regardless of the cost of hardware.

What about starting a Computer repair/Surplus business? I find it kind of hard to believe that you shouldn't try. I mean, if the advertising is right and your signs in big bold font say LAPTOP REPAIR or PC REPAIR people are probably going to think that is all you do. But what if you had your PC Repair and Surplus things such as PC diagnostics Ram Video cards Cpu's then heads might turn. and people might come back if they keep seeing updated hardware like 6th gen intel processors in these used laptops or gtx 970's laying around. custom builds would be fun too maybe 3rd party suppliers and sponsors to start with. I guess you would be dreaming a bit because in this day and age you can get everything online. but in a small city like Spokane that doesn't even boast a Fry's or any computer business for that matter there might be a better chance of having successful business because of convenience. Not to mention people will probably look at google reviews of your business. I notice there's maybe 1 or two small businesses in my area but they don't even have a website that works then they always end up shutting down business. All in all I have doubts that people will want to compair prices with a business that just opened a few days ago and will resort to buying from newegg still. that's probably the hard part.

you're talking out of your ass.

He failed... so everybody will fail. That makes sense.
-
I don't agree -- cell phone repair is the hot thing these days especially with all the flaws with the iPhones, and esp considering Apple usually won't repair the devices, they will make people just flat out buy a new 600 dollar phone!
-
Really appreciate the advice! Great heads up before getting too caught up in it. Computer servicing contracting makes MUCH more sense. Thank you!
-
BAD ATTITUDE, that's why you failed my friend.....
-
Crazy talk. I have paid my rent for the pass 3 years fixing phones, computers, and tablets.
The biggest mistake of opening a "computer repair biz" is that they avoid doing mobile devices. If you have a computer repair shop you have to be able to fix any computer on the market even phones and tablets. Phones and tablets are todays computers -
dude your talking through your ass! I started a PC repair business in 2009 from my kitchen table and now earn €6000 a month and employ two people... if you failed that's tough.. maybe you don't have the right attitude or the right skillset... those of us who do thrive.

I live in a low income urban area everyone doesnt have the money to buy a whole new computer so I think my computer repair buisness would be a good idea to do it in an urban area. I think it all depends where you open you're buisness

Ok another comment, "I created an ad on craigslist" I just lol'd no good tech looking for "good clients" is going to post on CL, that is NOT how you build a customer base AT ALL. right out the gate you are de-valuing your work. SMH

I didn't even have to watch, seen the title and just cringed. Are you trying to divert would be business owners from stepping out of the 9 to 5 to have their own piece of the pie? I see some of the comments below and it just seems like other biz owners trying to stop others from following a skill set. If you deal with clients that jump to 300 dollar computers, then you have the wrong client base. Cell phone repair, system clean ups, Selling refurbs, Custom system builds are very much viable. I average about 8 new custom system builds a month, 4 remote support sessions on average daily, at least 4 to 5 walk ins for random things on desktops. Good lord you couldn't have dropped a more discouraging title for a vid. Honesty is key, its really not hard to average $400 plus clear every day after a few months of building a decent reputation around town. IT just keeps growing. Tech is not going away, its GROWING fast. You can keep them bottom feeder clients 300 dollar computer clients. I don't service them at all
-
I started and within days I had 12 customers. But, I do not need the money and I do it on the side I have the best prices possible (I'm talking like 1$ for part install or 5-25$ virus removal in CAD)
-
Maybe make a video on how to approach business, and get them to sign your contract. That is a skill in itself.
-
You kinda sound like a bitter loser..."it didn't work for me so I don't want it to work for anyone". Lol
-
could talk to buisnesses and have them send out repairs to you if needed?
-
Just because you weren't successful doesn't mean others won't be. Could be that you look like a terrorist. Many people still would rather fix their computer, especially old people.
-
depends on your network, area, city, your business plan, and where/and how you advertise. as well ass using sources of advertising. depending on which demographic you're aiming for. for example, older people use yellow pages, and read the paper more often, so there is a target market for a certain type of people. just an idea.
don't let anyone whos failed ever tell you, that you can't! not everyone can be a singer and song writer, but you will never know untill you try!! -
Food for thought, thank you. But I don't really agree. I know someone in Colorado Springs that had another career totally (can't remember) and started to tinker with laptops and now he has more business than he can handle and has, last I heard, three others working for him.
Yes, there's a certain part of the population that will go to walmart and buy a $200 "biodegradable" laptop. And they do that every year. Others like myself, will fix a good old one, like a car, like the guy in Colo Springs. I'm on my 11 year old Lenovo 3000 due mainly to the guy in Colo Springs. I went to trade in the "piece of #$%$" and he said no it's not that and he proved it to me. That was several years ago now. And once I got rid of windows and put Zorin linux on it, it's NEVER run better.
So I do believe there's a market for fixing people's computers and especially selling good used ones. I'm looking toward doing that one day, but not sure where yet.
