Our big 80 day mission! Dubai International Airport revamp increases air traffic by one-third The refurbishment of two runways at Dubai International Airport helped the airport handle a third more aircraft per hour, easing air traffic congestion concerns, according to the Civil Aviation Authority. The Al Naboodah Construction Group has carried out the refurbishment of the two runways at the Dubai International Airport with minimal disruptions in flight operations. Thanks to a well-planned execution, the big project was finished within the 80-day schedule, with all the stakeholders working together in a one team-spirit. Dubai International Airport is one of the world’s busiest airports, handling over 66 million passengers annually. It is a 24 hour a day operation that demands the best in facilities, the latest technology, and the most astute brains; all within a culture where service and safety are paramount. It was against this backdrop that Al Naboodah Construction Group was given the monumental challenge of upgrading the Northern and Southern runways in the Summer of 2014. The project would arguably be the greatest test for the Group in nearly 60 years. Never in aviation history had such a task been attempted in an airport that remained operational. Dubai identified an 80 day window to complete the work. A period during which they still planned to serve 5 million passengers a month. The number of flights at Dubai International surged by about 31 per cent with the opening of both runways, when compared to the number of flights during the 80-day closure. Despite the sudden increase in traffic, operations ran smoothly. Not only could all those in Dubai be proud, but the global construction industry could reflect on some astonishing details. The combined efforts of the 3,500 strong team had laid over 410,000 tonnes of asphalt and 360,000 tonnes of wetmix. Over 1,700 new manhole covers had been laid; 11,000 new airfield lights, 1000km of cabling and over 8 km of drainage piping. The Al Naboodah Construction Group team had been working with the DAEP, DA, other Airport Authorities and the consultant for many months planning and assessing all eventualities to ensure a successful delivery and hand over to Dubai Airports by 20 July 2014.
