Bloody risky move by the Dubai airports authority. Plenty of airlines specifically emerging markets in Asia has the capacity to conduct long haul flights to Europe, not to mention the competing airports of Qatar's Hamad Intl and Abu Dhabi's new Midfield Terminal which both combined can already hurt dxb's capacity to fill and both airport accommodates two of the best airlines in the world. Very risky move by Dubai. But if they pull it off, I won't be surprised. It's as if, it's in the Emirati blood to pull things out of the box and turn things around for the good with lots of surprise, much like how Sheikh Maktoum had turned this humble, small fishing and pearl diving village of dry and desolate lands into something so big, the world took notice in a matter of a decade.
Originally, DWC was planned with 6 parallel runways. In an interview with Paul Griffiths with the BBC, who is the CEO of Dubai Airports, he stated that they will build 5 parallel runways. I was talking to a senior executive of Dubai World Central a few months ago and she said that they reduced it to 4. The tough times of 2008 are biting back but not as bad as those dark ages. Been a citizen of Dubai since the late 90s and boy oh boy this place has changed a lot. -
