"Emirates 236 Super, fly heading 0-niner-0, Runway 1-0-Left, full-length, cleared for takeoff" After years and years of back-and-forth bickering about whether or not O'Hare would ever see Airbus A380 passenger service, we came one BIG step closer yesterday when the regularly-scheduled Emirates flight from Dubai ( DXB / OMDB ), Emirates 235 Heavy ( UAE235 / EK235 ) was operated by a Super, a flight that is normally run on a Boeing 777-300/ER ( B77W ). Emirates 236 ( UAE236 / EK236 ) departed ORD via Runway 10-Left ( 1-0-Left / 10L ). Following the A380's departure, a Chicago Department of Aviation airfield ops vehicle drove down the length of the departure runway looking for any damage to the runway, runway lighting equipment, or any other FOD possibly left behind by the Super's departure. I was monitoring a number of frequencies in this video, in the following order: International Terminal 5 ramp control, 129.05; Metering, 121.67; Outbound Ground, 121.75; & finally, O'Hare Tower 3rd local 132.7 This flight was a one-off test run to test the popularity of the DXB - ORD - DXB route on an A380 as well as a test of the newly-modified Gate M-11 at International Terminal 5. Over the last few weeks, M-11 has undergone multiple modifications including the addition of a 2nd jetbridge to reach the upper deck of the A380 as well as ramp modifications to accommodate the larger aircraft that meant the shifting of gates M-10 and M-9, WITHOUT the loss of widebody aircraft parking capabilities! Unfortunately, as many of you may have seen on @flightradar24's Twitter feed, the aircraft was damaged at ORD by the existing M-11 jetbridge when the gate crew was attempting to attach the bridge to the aircraft. The damage was limited to small dents and scratches to the fuselage between the lower and upper decks, caused by a protruding section of the jetbridge. This arrival brought several hundred people out to O'Hare and the vicinity of the airport, from the usual gaggle of plane spotter friends of mine to airport employees on heir day off work to the general public who had heard about the well-publicized event through social media or the local TV and radio news, all who wanted to catch a glimpse of the gigantic widebody aircraft, a type which hadn't been seen at O'Hare since March 20th, 2007 when one of Airbus's test-beds visited the Windy City during its world tour.
