When playing with fireworks, one important thing to remember is that you're actually playing with a controlled detonation of explosives so read the instructions and follow them. What I think is happening here is that the left cone's contents must have heated up to ignition point that instead of coming out as a stream they all ignited immediately and caused an explosion.
