John Paul is an Emmy-nominated poet from the Emmy award-winning documentary Mr. Dial Has Something To Say. He is the co-founder and director of Real Life Poets, www.reallifepoets.org, a 501-(c)3 non-profit community service organization focusing on mentoring young adults, and encouraging good communication and oratorical skills using spoken word poetry and the arts. His passion for the arts and ability to inspire the youth of all ages afforded him the opportunity to connect with many community leaders and organizations. John Paul organized the first Alabama youth poetry slam team to be invited to the Brave New Voices International Teen Poetry Festival and finished Top 20 in the world. Most recently he leads the Teen Poetry Initiative which is a partnership with the Birmingham Public Library and funded by the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Presenter of 2014 TedxBirmingham Salon Talk: Your Voice is Your Power. Vendor for Better Basics School Wide Enrichment Program. He has served as a JCCEO P3 Career Mentor. He has received his mentor certification from the Department of Human Resources. In addition, He is a teaching artist for Create Birmingham. John Paul has served as vice-president of the board of directors for Youth Towers, a non-profit aimed to help fight youth/young adult homelessness. John Paul has worked as a presenter for Shelley Stewart’s Mattie C. Stewart Foundation’s Choice Bus, traveling the United States talking to young students about the power of education and staying in school. He is listed in the 2012 Southern Poverty Law Center’s Guidebook to Community Asset-Mapping as a “Hidden Community Asset.” He is also the editor of the Anthology Voices from The Storm: Our Spirits Will Not be Broken. Also, John Paul was honored to receive the Jefferson County Public Library Association’s Library Champion Award. In 2014, he was one of the recipients of the City of Birmingham’s 1st ever Fusion Awards for his work in community service using the arts. In Feb. 2015 John Paul took Real Life Poets international visiting and conducting workshops at New York University, the new campus in Abu Dhabi. He also had an opportunity to also visit Dubai while in the United Arab Emirates.In Oct. 2015, John Paul led Purdue University’s Fall Research Tour Cultural Arts workshop segment. In winter of 2015 John Paul co-founded Real Global Poets www.globalpoets.org and created an international poetry exchange project between youth in Alabama and youth in Kenya sharing life experiences through poetry. The first Real Global Poets international poetry exchange book project launched in January of 2016.
