When pain killers, injections and physiotherapy fail to manage knee pains, it is usually recommend total knee replacement (TKR) surgery for getting rid of excessive pain and aid for living normal life. Due to osteoarthritis or wear and tear, the cartilage beaks down, causing bones to rub against each other. The rubbing causes severe pain and swelling, making it impossible for patients to walk. At this stage, the total knee replacement is recommended. In total knee replacement surgery, Doctor replaced the worn-out cartilage by artificial Knee made up of chromium-cobalt. Metal components are impacted onto the bone or fixed using polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement. Several international studies have indicated that this knee will last for 10 years. This surgery will cost patients between Rs. 1.2 and 1.6 lakh (Cost depend on specific City and Hospital) for one knee replacement. Now, we have better artificial knee, due to this, patient can move his or her leg up to 135 degree after surgery. After surgery, patient should take all necessary precaution to avoid infections up to 2 weeks. Patients typically undergo several weeks of physical therapy and occupational therapy to restore motion and strength. Complete recovery from the operation involving return to full normal function may take three months.
