Gebäude | Informationen | Videos | Emirates | Aussicht
I have been working on getting internet at the roundhouse. but it isnt going well at the moment. we are in a bit of a dead spot and our options are quickly running out. we really need to work it out one way or another to make this a viable location to live one day. if anyone has an ideas then feel free to comment. satalight internet is just so expensive and very limited so the will be the last option.

You need to troubleshoot your setup. To be more specific, isolate the problem on your network. Things to take into consideration:
1. Check whether you have internet only when connected to GSM modem. Signal strength doesn't always equal signal quality. So you need to make sure your GSM connection is reliable and working. Disconnect other parts of the network while you are testing this.
2. Directional WIFI antenna is much better than sector which you have. Sector antennas are designed to cover larger area but signal drop-off is significantly bigger. You have to take into account that magnetic radiation at higher frequencies starts behaving like light. WIFI at 2.4GHz is affected by obstacles to a degree and clear line of sight is recommended. WIFI at 5GHz is seriously affected by the obstacles. When emission hits an obstacle like a tree it disperses a bit causing weaker signal and gaining some noise. Other things that can seriously affect your WIFI signal is for example if you are shooting it over water. Emission can reflect from surface with slight delay and cause a lot of noise even though signal strength won't be affected. WIFI is really tricky thing to make work over longer distances as many things can affect it. From my own personal experience 5GHz is much more stable, but pretty much requires clear line of sight.
3. Consider using LAN cable. There are outdoor versions with shielding and steel wire so you can hang it from trees and in general not worry about damaging them. Basically this would guarantee you good connection to your GSM modem.
4. Check if there are long distance WIFI access points available in near-by cities. You can skip the whole GSM part with a proper WIFI setup and achieve broadband speeds easily. I use to work for ISP where we've set up remote locations with access to 50Mbps+ speeds over 20km distance easily. GSM tends to be expensive and rather unreliable as you depend on local tower traffic for your bandwidth.
5. It would be really helpful if you could give a rough map of where things are and other objects on the property. There are many different technical solutions available for networking but it's hard to recommend anything when we don't know distances, elevation and in general things like trees, water and other elements. -
Well I got 2 issues with this before it even finished, where is the round house and if your off grid why do you need an internet connection. That not off grid. You couldn't get more on grid if you tried

Your a JACK OF ALL TRADES, great job.

your wire to your house is too long ?

Kris, I have some advice for you regarding protecting wires from the mice, etc. You need to get the wiring into a metal jacket. Here in the states we have electrical wiring called "BX" which has from two to four 10gg, 12gg, etc., wires inside. You can also use metal pipes. You can find empty BX in various sizes online pretty easily. It is not really expensive and it will save you a lot of grief from the forest and field animals that like to chew electrical wiring. I would also highly recommend that you protect any wiring in your vehicle if it will be parked by this house.

Can't you jsut get an internet company out there? I wouldn't cheap out on my internet lol

Hi Kris,
I live in the mountains in Colorado and I have a multi radio link for my internet. I noticed that you are running temporarily on your car battery. Your voltage may be too low. On some radios when the voltage is on the low end of what they accept they will randomly reboot. It was happening to me. I increased the voltage to the radio to the high end of what it accepts and the rebooting and drop outs stopped. Something to check.
I like what you are trying to do and it has been interesting to watch you build your home. It looks like a nice place that is all yours.

I don't know about all that. Seems to me all you are doing is bringing your daily distractions to your "get away" home.

Why not feed some cat5 cabling from your router down to a point where the wifi access point is closer to the house, or better still cat5 it all so you can use a POE injector and power your devices from that?
Well done, anyway, you are probably the last of your generation that will be able to live this dream.
Remember this is a two way transmission, so it might not be the receiving side that is the issue.
Get the router up in a tree as high as you can go and use cat5 as much as you can, ground planes won't help you here really. -
AHHHH DAILY VIDEOS!!!!! So excited!

your diagonal support on your door of this shed will let the door sag. If you were to reverse the support then you would hold the door square with compressive force, so it will last. Right now with it in the top inside corner you are relying on the strength of your screws alone and the weight is pulling them away, this will lead to sagging much sooner than if you have the brace in the top outside corner. But it is your baby, do it how you wish, it is just a pet peeve of mine, I don't like seeing bracing done not optimally. I like your build and wish you great success in your new home!

You need to stick a couple of chickens inside your router box. Another great video. Really inspired by all your videos. I'm a huge fan and it makes my day when I see you posted a new video.

Great job on the round house and communication shed. Whales seems like a mystical place thanks for sharing. My family came to America from Whales.

Connect a long ethernet cable to your 3g router and plug the other end into another router back in your house. You can the use the wifi in your cabin or plug an ethernet cable into the router to access full speed of the 3g router.

I had a similar setup, years ago. I found that ground planes were very important. Maybe with it stuck in your car, the car was acting as a ground plane? Try roofing the box with metal roofing.
