LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Las Vegas is the epicenter of boxing events and every time Manny Pacquiao holds his fights in the Sin City, media from all over flock to town to get updates of the fighting senator of the Philippines. Veteran sportswriters and boxing analysts are curious if Pacquiao still has what it takes to pull off a victory on Saturday (Sunday, Manila time). Some pundits believe Pacquiao's focus isn't at 100% given the time he spends mostly as a lawmaker. If these observers have one advice for Pacquiao, it's for him to look out for Jessie Vargas' right power punches. “Jessie Vargas has a potential to surprise a lot of people. He is being underestimated,” said Bernardo Osuna of ESPN Deportes. “I’m really surprised at the new Manny Pacquiao being a senator. He has matured a lot.” In This Corner host James Smith said that Vargas, being the younger fighter and the underdog, has nothing to lose in the bout. “It’s an interesting game. Things that happened in boxing where you got the old legend against the new guy,” Smith said. “I think it’s a good fight for Vargas in a sense that he has everything to gain and really nothing to lose.” But many fight analysts still pick Pacquiao over the younger Vargas. “With all due respect to Jessie Vargas, until someone shows me that Manny Pacquiao can’t do it anymore on the top level, I’m picking Manny Pacquiao to win this fight easily,” said ESPN’s Dan Rafael. Retired boxing referee Joe Cortez said Vargas will have to watch out for Pacquiao’s biggest weapon. “He still has the punching power and you don’t lose that,” Cortez said. Meanwhile, on the Nonito Donaire-Jessie Magdaleno card, many sportswriters are picking Donaire because of his experience. “I know Jessie can punch but I don’t think he's ever faced anybody in the remote hemisphere as Donaire. I like Donaire in that fight,” said Rafael. Smith is a little bit more cautious, saying “it’s a dangerous fight for Nonito but I think Nonito wins the fight." Some believe the undefeated Magdaleno's left hand will prevail and that the Mexican-American will win against Donaire. “I think Jessie beats him. I think Magdaleno beats him,” said Chris Maathuis of CBS Sports News. The official weigh-in for the Pacquiao-Vargas fight will take place at the Encore Theater on Friday (Saturday, Manila time). In the Philippines, the fight will be seen live, commercial-free and in high definition on November 6, 9 a.m. on SKY Sports Pay-Per-View. In the Middle East, the fight will be shown on November 6 at 4 a.m. in KSA and 5 a.m. in Dubai, live (with replays) via TFC.tv. It is also available via OSN, ELife and Mozaic TV powered by Ooredoo. In the US, it will be shown on November 5 live, distributed by Top Rank PPV.
