Every year about this time the sharks run the beaches up and down the east coast. For the shore-based angler there is no larger fish to conquer than a Shark, as they commonly reach sizes of 7 feet or more. There are a multitude of species available in different regions during different times, New Jersey typically sees both Sandbar and Sand Tiger sharks throughout the summer with other species making their rounds as well, the further south you go, the greater the diversity in species, while in Cape Cod, Great Whites to 20' can be sometimes be seen within spitting distance of shore. If you catch a shark, it is best to keep it as close to the water as possible while unhooking and preparing for release. Pliers should be kept within reach at all times to minimize the amount of time the shark is out of the water. As large as they are, these fish are fragile and can die from stress if mishandled, the longer they are out of the water the more revival they'll need. Pliers, Camera, get it in and get it back out!
