According to local reports, the sinkhole measured 2 meters (6.5 ft.) wide and 3 meters (9.8 ft.) deep. Sinkholes in urban contests are often caused by erosion of the ground by the water coming at high pressure from a broken main. Heavy weights such as vehicles passing over the hole can then result in the collapse of the top layer of soil and road surface into the void. Mexico City's mayor, Miguel Angel Mancera, blamed the rupture of the water main on the age of the pipes in the Valley of Mexico region, some of which are 70 years old, and said that some 13,000 kilometers (8,000 miles) of pipe need to be replaced, EFE reported.
