According to preliminary reports, a power failure to the subway system occurred and automatically activated the train’s emergency brake systems. However, the brakes locked the trains wheels, causing them to derail, and the cars to crash violently against the walls of the tunnel, one of the deepest in the world. So far 19 people are reported dead. Over 160 have been injured and were taken to hospitals. Due to the nature of the crash, both numbers are expected to rise since more people are thought to be trapped in the wreckage.
