Dubai - THE FUTURE OF CITIES

This is a conversation starter first, a video second. I’d love to hear your thoughts on cities, the future, and this project. I shared some words, a reading list and featured interviewees here: medium.com/@oscarboyson/the-future-of-cities-ba4e26c807fe#.lrpyoofi4 * Note that the first shot in the movie a "Garbage Truck in Taipei" is actually in Changhua City, also in Taiwan. Thank you Taiwanese friends for pointing this out! Thank you to everybody who contributed! Trust me when I say that even if I didn’t get your footage in the cut, we can feel it in the finished product. I want to keep telling urban stories and building on these ideas - hope you do too. can anyone link me the video with Jeff Holden talking about commute time that was used in this video? I couldn't seem to find it
-
Well awesome I'm excited. I'll be 42 by 2045

Wonderful primer for both professional and everyday citizens. I forwarded to my friend John Rahaim, the Director of City Planning for San Francisco. Great job. Jane Jacobs is my hero. You will love her biography that was published in 2016.

Awesome video Oscar, very insightful and interesting.

There seems to be an underlying theme here--all the major innovations in construction and design that solve fundamental problems of urban living (or at least those profiled in this video) are coming from East Asia--China and South Korea specifically. The contribution from the U.S. was Detroit--and it was urban farming and repainting some buildings. Way to go America, ceding the future to East Asia sounds like a marvelous idea...

Well done. I will be participating in this far-reaching renaissance as the banker-led new world order command and control system crumbles as free humanity arises from the rubble.
-
I could easily watch a long format (2+ hours) of this.
-
My hometown is the capital of a geographically large country, and 60% of the city, and 74% of the country is forest. Eco-friendly though.

Hey Oscar! I'm taking a lot of globalization/urbanization classes at Cornell (I'm a Junior). Including answering the question of what development is from an economic and labor standpoint. I wish you would've talked a bit about the labor standards for the people making all of this stuff around these cities and what challenges there are worldwide, such as the Huko system in China. Also those laborers in India building those homes are informal workers or even immigrants that face hardships such as getting paid for their labor. Overall this is a super cool project!! I hope you keep focusing on this area. If you want to talk about labor for the next video the ILR school at Cornell is very into this stuff.

Oscar, What book would you recommend reading to get a better idea on why Urbanization is the future?

Great video oscar -
Every time I walk around a place where the primacy of the automobile has been abandoned in favour of breathing space for walking people, I feel a glimpse of what a good future in urbanization might look like.
-
That was awesome!
