I agree that self driving cars have a lot of potential to reduce traffic problems and improve mobility independence overall however I have two problems with this video.
1: it's a bit of a defeatist argument to say that it's useless to "expect people to be better than they are". That could be applid to literally anying as a means of just not tryiing. Kid doesn't know math? Don't try teaching him, that's wishing upon a star that people can be better than they are. Just let the computers do all teh calculations, they're way better at it anyways. which leads into ...
2: Automated systems without backups are a quick way to cause massive harm and death. For example when the Eurofighter Typhoon was being flight tested they ran into multiple computer problems, namely condensation freezing on the sensors that then fed the CPU incorrect data, that would throw the jet wildly out of control. They had already installed a kill switch for the CPU. Why? Because it's better to have no computer at all rather than one that is trying to kill you. By that same token it would be foolish to remove human controls from a car. And if you are going to keep human controls you're going to need training to use those controls. Otherwise you will start seeing a rash of vindictive script kiddies murdering people on highways because they know there's nothing the passengers can do to save themselves. Things like this have already happened with conventional vehicles as is, the problem would only get a billion times worse by totally removing human controls and networking all the cars together. -
found a flaw: cars in front of a traffic traffic light should not accelerate at the same time AND at the same rate. That would cause the distance from one car to another to stay the same at any speed, which would be tailgating. The distance between cars should rise in proportion to the speed. a solution would be to accelerate simultaneously like you recommend, but only to the point when a car just passed the traffic light.

Those self driving cars would need to be built without windows just to avoid us having heart attacks every time we reach an intersection and witness (without a tinny chance of control) how a car narrowly miss t-boning us (or vice versa)... well, I'm assuming the software works 100%, which have been impossible so far...

1:53 is like windows 8/8.1/10 loading animation :P

Yes because what we definitely need is to force all the pedestrians into cars, that won't have any effect on the environment
-
.i thought about this as a kid, every single aspect. not the first time i found my ideas on the internet though
-
I ride a bike
-
What about the pedestrians?
-
I find this video disparaging to monkeys

Even if you could get a large enough amount of people to not-drive, there'd still be people who can reasonably support still driving themselves. The solution is: there's no solution, because, for instance, another AI or human could hack the AI server controlling the self-driving cars and cause traffic which the humans in the self-driving cars cannot solve, while the people driving cars can rebel off the road and drive away instead of leaving their car. That will happen eventually if enough people (say 5% of drivers in a given road) ride self-driving cars and the inevitable hack occurs.
-
hold on there buckaroo, all those cars at the intersection were tailgating and not in the middle. In that scenario what happens when one leaves or one has to come on a traffic snakes or inverse traffic snakes appear? Or should the cars just all simultaneously accelerate but at different speeds, ever decreasing until the last car?
-
It's also the solution to solving drunk driving and cellular device related accidents. Actually, you know what, now that I think about it, we could lower the drinking age to 18 in America if self-driving cars take over the roads entirely.

Top channel, top video. Dislikes are not welcome here.

Imagine the tax money self driving cars would free up when traffic lights are no longer needed. Not to mention all the traffic cops who are now forced to do real police work.
-
Yeeeah.. not gonna happen :/ some people are just stupid and some SHOULD NEVER GET DRIVERS LICENCE.. i guess thats the solution?
-
But even with only self-driving cars there must still be intersections because of crosswalks and pedestrians.
-
"Always in the middle" is terrible advice. You can't control the driver behind you, and if you allow their tail-gating to force you to tail-gate, you've made things far worse. Greater following distance would be very good advice, however.
-
Spot-on analysis , as always, but getting people to give up control of their cars....good luck. with that.
-
Well fuck tailgaters.

Wow, the image of streams of self driving cars just weaving through one another is pretty scary though. That'll take some getting used to
