The distance from Girona via Barcelona to Madrid is about 700 km. Girona and Barcelona are part of the Spanish autonomous community of Catalonia, including the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona. Because of the autonomous status of Catalonia is also designated as historical nationality. The railway line runs through Zaragoza, the capital of the autonomous community of Aragon, comprising the provinces of Huesca, Teruel and Zaragoza. Von Madrid aus sind im April noch sehr gut die schneebedeckten Bergkuppen dieses Gebirgszuges zu sehen. Wir fahren um 7:11 in Girona ab und sind um 11:15 in Madrid. Nach 700 km kommen wir völlig entspannt an und haben in der Zwischenzeit die Landschaft genossen. Und das obwohl der Zug auch noch über 600 Höhenmeter bewältigen musste. Madrid ist Europas höchstgelegene Hauptstadt und liegt auf 667 m über dem Meeresspiegel. Der Bahnhof in Girona ist schon beeindrucken, da er tief unter die Erde gelegt wurde, ebenso wie der Bahnhof in Barcelona. Der Bahnhof in Madrid erinnert aber viel mehr einen Flughafen. Über lange Rollbänder und Rolltreppen erreicht man den Ausgang oder die Metro Station. An Spaniens Bahnhöfen für die Hochgeschwindigkeitszüge Renfe AVE werden überall Gepäckkontrollen mit Scannern durchgeführt. Es ist auch eine Sitzplatzreservierung erforderlich, die am Abfahrtsbahnhof überprüft wird. Wir reisten mit einem Renfe Spanien Pass, eine günstige Möglichkeit für Ausländer in Spanien mit AVE Fern- und Mittelstreckenzüge (ohne Liegewagen) zu reisen.
