In a bid to consolidate its tech operations, Zomato has laid off the core tech engineering team of Urbanspoon, the online food review and order platform's biggest acquisition in the US. This could be seen as first signs of restructuring by Zomato at its tech operations outside India. According to sources, after migration of users from Urbanspoon to Zomato, the Infoedge-backed company has decided to consolidate its tech operations and handing out pink slips to Ubanspoon tech team is one of the first such measures. Urbanspoon, for which Zomato had to shell out more than $50 million, had about 40 employees when it was acquired by the latter. Out of which the core tech team was of about 20 people. The spokesperson of Zomato could not be reached for a comment. Some of the members of other departments at Urbanspoon, marketing for exapmple, have also left the organization and rest could well be on their way out. At the time of the acquisition, Zomato had about 35 million users in US but Urbanspoon gave a boost to Zomato by boosting the user base to about 80 million after acquisition. Co-founded by Deepinder Goyal in 2008, Zomato has recently started focusing on online food ordering space and is in expansion mode.
